[sane-devel] I/O Errors with hp 7400c - achieve more verbosity

An additional question:
 How can I achieve more verbosity to find out what's going on?

scanimage -v -L   or
scanimage -v >testfile

didn't do anything, dmesg neither provides much useful information -
and g**gl wasn't my friend in that case.
