sorry for likely starting a wild goose chase.

i failed to study the resultant stderr log with respect to function
sane_get_option_descriptor output, being too excited with the
elimination of the core dump with envvar SANE_DEBUG_GENESYS = 8.

it seems that s->opt[option].name fails for genesys_gl847 only when
option is any of these values:

  1, 7, 12, 26, 36 and 46

that there seem to be a bunch without a name, this condition might
not be all that unusual.

but i'm not sure what the actual problem is and thus my fix
is likely just a hack to the symptom.
