I might have a little time over the weekend. However, I'm not aware of
any work done on this backend for a while and it only supports that one
scanner so I think it unlikely that someone else has worked on it and
broken it. I;m thinking perhaps that it is most likely to be 32bit/64bit
or perhaps a timing issue on a faster machine. Who knows?

I can't really advise on that.
Assuming your client has used SANE on this scanner before, do they
remember what OS, which SANE version and if it was 32-bit or 64-bit?
