I spoke too soon in my email sent a few minutes ago.

Running with the current backend git version, the "advanced options"
panel no longer gives the two focus options: focus on glass or focus on
film (it used to say focus above the glass as I recall).

It is better in that it no longer crashes, but is still a 
regression: I suspect that I can no longer scan films.

So it seems that commit 580c278dcafe4159213406b4307ee8598fe08fe7
was too simplistic?
