I have been exploring further and discovered that xsane works with
the TPU *only* if the Film type in the Advanced options is set
to Positive Film or Negative film. It gives the previously reported
"Invalid argument" if set to "Positive Slide" or "Negative Slide".

So TPU works with Film but not Slides. Is this a backend problem?

I hope that is enough to track this down. If not is there a debug
option I can set somewhere, or maybe I should reach for gdb?
I hope the Makefile has a gbd symbol target.
