I have set up my 1640SU scanner with the TPU
and run the SANE_DEBUG_EPSON2=255. (I have yet to look for where the
debug bits are declared).

The attached sane_debug3.txt.gz was the result:

1) The scanner with TPU stopped flashing the led light, so was ready.
2) I started xsane with debug as above.
3) The Positive slide setting was already selected (from previous runs).
4) I clicked the Acquire preview button, and got the error window
   (Invalid op, I think)
5) I quit xsane to keep the debug log short.

I will try to get a similar log when "Positive film" is selected,
which should succeed.

Hope this helps. It will take me some time to understand the log...
