I'm not sure what this means but I think it's possible that the scanner is
supported by two different backends. One backend requires an additional
software from Epson to make the scanner work, the other backend may work
without the proprietary software from Epson.

I guess in both cases the scanner will need the correct firmware being
uploaded by scane.

The source of the firmware is Epson in your case. If it isn't available
anywhere for download, then maybe you have to extract it from a Windows
driver or some other source.
