Hi Amy,
I'm that guy with the issue with macOS.
I used Mattias Ellert's page of Sane files for macOS. It has recently
closed down. (I suspect there was trouble keeping up with changes to
the Mac OS.) Some copies are found on the Wayback machine:

Loading 4 files, plus a little fiddling, allowed me to keep an Agfa
scanner alive on Snow Leopard. But nothing seems to work for El
Capitan. My present solution has required making a partition on the El
Capitan machine and transferring all of Snow Leopard there (Sane files
included) with Disk Utility.
You might try the same thing. Booting up separately, your present
scanner and its software could still be useful.

Don't really know about MacOS but I know that we did recently have
another user with an issue on MacOS.
The suspicion was that there was a problem in libusb that was addressed.
It may also be that we have an error in our use of it.
I don't believe that anyone is actively looking at that issue at the
moment though :(
Cheers,
Ralph
