Scanner buttons via an emebedded PC, to PDF over ethernet, has also long
been provided from a Hewlett Packard Network ScanJet 5 conversion project:

Welcome to anyone who might want to grab code & merge.
It is entirely public domain source, not sane, & pre AI, but free
C & SH, runs on Unix (FreeBSD-4.11 & Linux).
Don't worry about linked text "or Purchase a conversion kit": Just
that some previously chose to save their time & instead pay
me to compile bootable disks, but All source Is linked. no binaries
without sources, no shareware.
