You might like to try

$ grep umask .*
.bashrc:umask 002 # see http://lists.debian.org/debian-med/2007/10/msg00079.html
.profile:umask 002 # see http://lists.debian.org/debian-med/2007/10/msg00079.html

I have no idea whether one of both files is executed but if it does
it should help.
