I'm pretty sure SDL_mixer just uses libsmpeg, which I think is in Ubuntu.

Anyway, the idea is not for us to use mp3 files as part of the game,
just to play any mp3 files the user has on his/her computer.  So the
target audience would already have the "codec/patent" issue addressed.

I'll look into it a bit more on my Ubuntu machine to see if the
default install can do it.  It is possible that the capability is
already there, just not in a way very evident to the "end user".
