If you just want to run the emulator and don't need anything else, then
you can just directly download the emulator .zip Android SDK component,
unzip that, and run it. It could be great to have a
google-android-emulator contrib package that does this for you.
Something like this:
https://salsa.debian.org/android-tools-team/google-android-ndk-installer
direct download links and checksums are maintained here:
https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/tree/PKGBUILD?h=android-emulator
As for turning off non-member posting, we have to keep the list open to
any poster, unforatuntely, because its a team email account used in the
debian/control "Maintainer:" field. It is a bummer, I couldn't find
another way around it, but I'm open to solutions if someone wants to dig
into the problem.

Maybe cdesai or andrewsh_ or _hc or someone with admin access can set up a moderator who checks and approves all the mails sent to the list by non-members. It really helps in fighting spam. I moderate the mailing lists for Lubuntu. I can help in getting started if someone wants to take up the job.

Much faster and doesn't put too much pressure on your systems resources. You just need to connect your phone using a cable and enable usb debugging. The device will show up beside the run button. AVD really churns your resources. Not suggested unless you have above average processing power.
