  I think I prefer solving this problem by translating the description
string in the accessor method, and handling the empty string there.
Actually, maybe my _() gettext wrapper should handle the empty string;
something to think about, anyway.  I've also applied your patch, because
I think it's a good idea to have an explicit name for "no column
information" rather than just relying on the fact that the default
constructor generates a blank column-information structure.
