I must correct myself here: indentfirst does work.  I forgot that I set
"\parindent 0pt" in my test file. ;)

But indentfirst is ugly.  It's ugly in scrartcl, and it's even uglier in
article because it uses too much space.

There is only one case where I would recomment using indents except for the
first paragraph, and that is when using vertical writing.

So if it were up to me, I would delete that line.
