This would have worked too:
pristine-tar checkout p4vasp_0.3.29+ds.orig.tar.xz

Yes, I noticed that too.  In my opinion, uscan *should* have got +ds
from d/changelog.
I'll investigate further and file a bug in uscan if needed.
