this one is only required to compile client applications, such as wmnut.

it seems that you only run newhidups as root. If so, upsd should also
run as root to be able to read/write the data from the driver's
socket.
But that's not the solution, and the problem might be elsewhere...

What append if you don't set the "-user=root"?
Also, what are the permissions on /dev/bus/usb/002/ (using "ls -l")?
