This sounds like either a kernel problem, or a hardware problem. NUT
will not be able to interact with the UPS until it shows up in the
lsusb listing (and not just in the root hub status).

You may want to try another cable (maybe the host controller driver is
not handling some errors properly). Also, if this UPS also has a
serial port, you may need to completely power it down and unplug it
before switching between the serial port and USB. (The driver.list
implies that the 5110 is USB-only, but I am not familiar with
Powerware's products, so it's just a guess.)
