Sorry for a bit of delay in replying to you.  Had a bit of a flat-drama…

I managed to build pretty much master branch for squeeze-backports
using cowbuilder that includes backports in addition to the basic
system sources, just as Hilko advised.  It also all installs and plays
nicely in Debian Squeeze and all tests I've performed see to be
working fine.

I still feel rather uncomfortable with building a backport using build
dependencies from other backports but that's more of a question to
what is better practice here; I think I'll follow this up with people
in debian-backports mailing list.

I don't have upload permission so if someone could upload the
debian/5.2.6+dfsg-7_bpo60+2 tag would be great.
