Package: capplets
Version: 2.6.1-12

Applications >>> Desktop Preferences >>> Mouse

When the Left Handed Mouse option is selected, MB1 (the index finger button)
behaves exactly like MB3 (the ring finger button). Without MB1, most normal
click actions become impossible.

Stated in another way, MB1 disappears and I keep two MB3 buttons. MB2 is
unaffected and allows menu selections to go back and unselect "Left Handed
Mouse".

This behaviour appeared around August 16 on a weekly updated Debian unstable
system and has not been fixed with regular updates yet.

On a completely different system, with different hardware, the Ubuntu
installation exhibits the same problem, which may suggest that the real
problem is not local to my system but generic somewhere in Gnome. I do not
have the means to find out exactly where the problem is located though.

My current system is a fully patched Debian unstable,
Linux ig0196 2.6.7 #1 Mon Aug 16 13:36:45 CEST 2004 i686 GNU/Linux
