Actually, there is a configuration option to set the default file
handler for directories:
Open the "LXQt Configuration Center" and then "File Associations".
Select the MIME type "inode/directory" from the list and then
"Change..." to set the default application for this file type.
(see the attached screen shot)
The file association is written to
~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list as:
[Default Applications]
inode/directory=pcmanfm-qt.desktop
If there is no default application set, the first handler in
alphabetical order of the desktop files is used. This could even be the
music player Audacious, since it also handles directories.
There are still some issues:
1) This approach is not that obvious. I would also appreciate an easy
configuration for common file types like images, videos, sound files and
directories.
2) The distinction between "File Manager PCManFM" and "PCManFM File
Manager" could be more clearly. One is for LXDE, the other for LXQt.
3) The file associations are written to two different files:
~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list
~/.config/mimeapps.list
The first file is written by the utility "File Associations", the other
is maintained by PCManFM-Qt. This should, of course, be consistent
within one desktop environment.
Used packages from Debian testing/Stretch:
lxqt-config_0.10.0-3+b1_i386.deb
lxqt-panel_0.10.0-8_i386.deb
pcmanfm-qt_0.11.0-5_i386.deb
