I just tried (with squeeze first) but I don't know how multiple tarballs
should be handled. I have put all the tarballs from sid in my build
area, use the following gbp.conf:

[DEFAULT]
debian-branch = squeeze-backports
dist = squeeze-backports
pristine-tar = False
create-orig = False

But when I build, I get:

dpkg-source: error: cannot represent change to thunderbird-labels-0-9/skins/classic/thunderbird_32.png: binary file contents changed
dpkg-source: error: cannot represent change to thunderbird-labels-0-9/skins/default/thunderbird_32.png: binary file contents changed
dpkg-source: error: cannot represent change to thunderbird-labels-0-9/skins/larry/thunderbird_32.png: binary file contents changed

That's quite mysterious since all MD5 sums are matching. Other PNG does
not have this warning, only those ones.
