can you try the following?

Log into the machine via SSH as the same user. When the menus freeze,  
run this from inside the SSH session:

   export DISPLAY=<vnc-display-number> (can be obtained via 'echo  
$DISPLAY' inside the VNC
                                        session)
   marco --replace

Does this bring back the menus?

I assume that we need to move this bug over to the src:marco package  
(marco is MATE's window manager).
