In the current releases xsane does a grayscale preview scan and
converts it to a black/white image with the software threshold.
The real scan is done in lineart mode. This makes sense because
this scan normally is much faster than the grayscale scan.
I do not understand how a backend can make available a
contrast and brightness option in lineart mode but no
threshold option.

Xsane does not expect this and so there may be no threshold
slider for the hp backend.

I will think about adding a grayscale to lineart scan (not preview)
mode to xsane, although the backend really should make available
a threshold option in lineart mode, so the backend should be changed here.

It does make sense because when you change the notebook in the setup window
then the changes you have done are already applied when you press APPLY before
changin the notebook.
You immedeatly see the change when you e.g. change the preview gamma value.
