Could you please do some debugging so we can find out what's wrong?

E.g. "SANE_DEBUG_EPSON=255 xsane 2>log" and show us the log (or at least
the last 100 lines before the segfault).

And try "gdb xsane" and when it segfaults, try a backtrace ("bt").

I personally haven't heard of such a problem in the epson backend but
I'm not its maintainer.
