Thanks a lot for your patch.

I'm still in doubt whether the odd number of urb packages is causing 
the problems people are seeing with libusb. However, having no better 
explanation I decided to apply your patch. It shouldn't hurt even if 
the problem lies somewhere else.

I made some minor modifications to it, the resulting backend is 
available from SANE CVS.
