The command '/sbin/fuser -v /dev/usb/scanner0' produces no output.

No, the output follows:-

My apologies Henning, wont happen again. Thank you for your response. My
answers to your questions are above. The funny thing is I thought it may
be locked by some other app. but the KDE scanning app., Kooka, runs OK.
and it also uses sane. Can you think of anything else I can try?
