On my previous machine, I had a USB2 card in a PCI slot, and USB1.1 on
the motherboard (Linux kernel 2.4) and the scanner only worked when
attached to the motherboard USB.

For me it gives no difference using the Epkowa frontend - they
build/relay on Sane-backends.
