An external hub? I don't have one. Excuse my ignorance but don't all
motherboard USB have integrated hubs?

Not all USB are created equal. I have an old notebook
which only works with powered USB devices (i.e not with flash card
readers etc)

If I remember there was an Epson 2450 and a 2450 Photo. As was suggested
earlier perhaps the page should be updated.
