This might explain why I can change the contrast and brightness of scans 
after turning off 'Use custom gamma table' in XSane by using the 
standard controls.

scan2pdf does not give me this option as brightness and contrast can 
only be controlled through the advanced settings which seem to be 
affected by the issue.
