I don't know why you hate update-alternatives -- after all it's only
update-alternatives who is supposed to write to the alternatives
database, and "update-alternatives --config doom" is OK for text-based
programs. Our program also call update-alternatives to do the real
changes. You can take a look at alternative.py (by import or just
copy/paste) if you want a parser. And I'm glad to add functionalities
for you if you need it.
