Never thought about the display question. aptitude does reformat the
description anyway, for dpkg -s I don't care about the formatting and
lintian only dislikes too long lines. But I heard rumors, that there are
other package managers (and some don't even run in terminals), too :-)

For easy diffing and merging I'd like to have them share as much code as
possible, e.g. by using substvars (The Source: and Package: lines and
some paragraphs of the long description need to be different, of course).
