It can only be your own decision what's worth spending effort for, and
what not. So if you need or want S3 support rather sooner than later,
you are more than welcome to give packaging it a try.

I've sent an ITP for it:

Nobody complained there. The next step would be to create a package good
enough to upload to unstable, or at least experimental. Then the package
needs to clear the NEW-queue by getting approval by the FTP-masters.

You may want to subscribe to this mailing list, if you haven't
already. This is where we coordinate.

"We" currrently are Sven and me.

The bacula packages in Debian were effectively unmaintained some years
ago. I picked them up and got them into shape again and later Sven
joined.
