This would be an upstream bug, since the scripts indeed use a mixture of
assignment with and without default values.

Manual usage would be indeed easier if all scripts used a way to
override the default value by setting an external variable, like
"$db_name" here.

But I think this is a cosmetic and low-priority, albeit easily fixable bug.
